Description

Māori Kūki ‘Āirani Matariki ‘Etū depicts figures dancing in the presence of Tangaroa, the deity of the ocean and abundance. Matariki is the Cook Islands Māori name for Pleiades, the star cluster whose rising signals the beginning of a new year. A cosmological guide to planting, fishing and harvesting, bringing kopu tangata (family) and community together, connecting land, ocean, ancestors and future generations. Each ‘etū (star) casts shifting shadows as light moves across the wall, echoing the movement and rhythms of the seasons.
