Description
I’ve always been fascinated nature in general—and in this instance, the Puriri moth.
It is our largest moth and is endemic to the Te Ika a Maui.
The puriri moths have a 5 year caterpillar stage, and feeds on the Puriri, Maire and Manuka trees.
On reaching maturity as a moth, their lifespan is approximately 24-48 hours.
I have nostalgic childhood memories from spending many summers up in Bell Block, Taranaki at nana’s homestead. Mt Taranaki was the first sight everyday as we headed out to play and explore.
Over time I became aware of the deforestation that was taking place and the changes naturally offset outside of the sanctuary of the family homestead.
