Description
Talo Fetu Mata’aliʻi draws on the Samoan interpretation of the rising of Mata’aliʻi, and features the stylised form of talo (taro) leaf, whose radiating patterns extend to each point of the star. Cultivation and knowledge of the stars are shared across many island cultures, including Melanesia and Micronesia, reflecting deep connections between land and ocean. These stars honour traditional navigators, and guides planting and harvesting, as ʻāiga (family) and community gather, acknowledging enduring connections between land, ocean, ancestors and future generations yet to come. Each fetu (star) casts shifting shadows as light moves across the wall, echoing the movement and rhythms of the seasons.
